Mobility Grant for Norwegian Language, Literature and Culture
Are you studying Norwegian language, literature or culture at Master or Ph.D. level? If so, you could be eligible for a grant.
The mobility grant is awarded for one-, two- or three-months’ fieldwork at a Norwegian university or research institute. It is a contribution to cover subsistence costs and travel costs to and from Norway. The grant is administered by the Norwegian Directorate of Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir).
Who may apply?
You must be a Master and Ph.D.-student at higher education insitution outside of Norway. Your home insitution must have a Department for Nordic/Scandinacian studies, and you must have chosen Norwegian language, Norwegian literature, or Norwegian culture as topic for your thises/dissertation. You must be a student at a department for Nordic/Scandinavian studies.
If you are not a student at a Department of Nordic/Scandinavian studies, your application may still be considered if your thesis/dissertation has a clear focus on Norwegian language, literature or culture. Assessment of such application requires available funds.
All applications must be submitted online through HK-dirs digital applicaton form Espresso. Applications by email will not be assessed.
What does the grant cover?
The mobility grant is awarded as a fixed rate travel stipend and fixed rate residence stipend.
Travel stipend:
- NOK 3,000 for travel from countries in Europe
- NOK 4,500 for travel from St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia
- NOK 6,000 for travel from other cities in Russia, other Eurasia countries and countries outside of Europe
Residence stipend:
- The stipend follows the rates set by The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund for basic support and is NOK 12 500 per month.
- The stipend is awarded for one, two or three months.

How to apply?
1. Download and read the Guidelines for the Mobility grant for language, literature and culture in English or Norwegian. The guideline is available for download in English and Norwegian below:

2. Prepare a project description and contact a lecturer/researcher in Norway, specializing in your chosen subject area, and who may consider guiding you during your stay.
3. Inquire about a letter of support from your supervisor at your home insitution, and an invitation letter from your host insitution in Norway.
3. Fill out the online application form in Espresso. Your application can be written in English or Norwegian.
4. Remember to attatch the mandatory attatchments to your online application.
- a recommendation letter from the home institution tutor
- a personal invitation letter from the Norwegian institution
- a copy of your passport
5. Submit the application before the deadline.
All applications will be assessed internally in HK-dir and processed by the Program Committee for Norwegian Studies Abroad. During the assessment the project's relevance, design and implementation are assessed.
We aim to finalise the assesment process and all applicants will be informed of the outcome of the process by email.
Other practical information
Recipients of the mobility grant is responsible for obtaining housing during their stay in Norway. HK-dir does not provide housing.
Grant recipients who need a visa to enter Norway should apply for this as soon as possible at their nearest Norwegian embassy our consulate. HK-dir cannot pay out the grant if a visa to enter Norway is rejected.
