Shinjuku-ku Foreign Student Scholarship

Shinjuku City City Scholarship for International Students

Shinjuku City City provides the " Shinjuku City Scholarship for International Students" to encourage the study of international students living in Shinjuku City who need financial assistance to Living studies. This scholarship is funded by a donation from the late Toshihide Baba and the late Otsushiro Hamada to be used for international student support projects. To apply, you must be recommended by your enrolled university, etc. The application period for the fiscal year 2023 (FY2023) is from mid-May to early June. For details, please contact your school.

Eligibility

  1. Students who have enrolled in a master's or doctoral course at a graduate school in city for at least one year, a university department in accordance with Article 97 of the School Education Law (Law No. 26 of 1947), a junior college department in accordance with Article 85 of the same law or Article 108, Paragraph 7 of the same law, or a special training college in accordance with Article 125, Paragraph 3 of the same law (in the case of private special training colleges, only special training colleges approved by the ward in accordance with Article 130, Paragraph 1 of the same law). (In the case of a private special training school, limited to a special training school approved by city in accordance with Article 130, Paragraph 1 of the same law) for at least one year and is expected to continue enrollment for at least one year in the future.
  2. The applicant must be recorded in the basic resident register of the city in accordance with the Basic Resident Registration Act (Act No. 81 of 1967), and must currently reside in city.
  3. The applicant must be of good academic and personal character, and must be in need of financial assistance to Living his/her studies in Japan.

    Those who meet all of the above conditions are eligible to receive the scholarship.
    In particular, (3) "in need of financial support" refers to those who are earning a living through part-time work or other means due to a low level of remittances. The "expected to be enrolled for at least one year" in (1) means "expected to be enrolled from April of this year to March of next year.

Number of grantees

The number of students enrolled in the program will be determined within the scope of the budget each fiscal year. (About 15 students each year)

How to Apply

 The documents required for application are as follows Please contact the office of the school you are enrolled in.
(1) Application form for the Shinjuku City foreign student scholarship (in the applicant's own handwriting)
(2) Shinjuku City Recommendation Form for International Students (written by the applicant's school)
(3) Transcript of academic records issued by the president or principal of the school in which the applicant is enrolled
(4) Certificate of residence (showing status of residence and period of stay) or copy of residence card
(5) Other documents deemed necessary by the mayor Shinjuku City in addition to those specified in the preceding items.

Selection Method

After the application is submitted, the scholarship recipient will be selected by the Shinjuku City Foreign Student Study Encouragement Fund Selection Committee. The results of the selection will be notified to the applicant and the president of the university.

Amount of grant

The scholarship period is only for the fiscal year in which you are selected as a scholarship recipient (one year from April to March of the following year). Even if you have already received the scholarship, you must apply for a new scholarship after the scholarship period ends.

Payment Method

The scholarship will be granted twice a year (July and December), 120,000 yen each. The payment period is subject to change.

Change of notified items

 In the event of any of the following changes in the scholarship recipient, a written explanation of the reasons for the change must be promptly delivered to Multicultural Society Promotion DivisionRegional Promotion DepartmentShinjuku City.
(1) When the scholarship recipient takes a leave of absence, transfers to another school, or withdraws from school
(2) When the scholarship recipient is suspended or otherwise punished
(3) When there is a change in status of residence
(4) When there is a change in name, address, or other information provided on the application form
(5) When the scholarship recipient falls under any other circumstances specified separately by the Shinjuku mayor in addition to those specified in each of the preceding items

Rescission of the grant decision and suspension of the payment

 If a scholarship recipient falls under any of the following circumstances, the decision to grant the scholarship will be cancelled or the payment of the scholarship will be suspended. In such cases, the scholarship recipient may be asked to return all or part of the scholarship already granted.
(1) When the scholarship recipient received the scholarship through false application or other wrongful means
(2) When the recipient is disqualified
(3) When the recipient's conduct is extremely poor
(4) When the mayor otherwise deems it inappropriate
