Programs
AMINEF annually awards scholarships and fellowships to Americans and Indonesians to study, teach, or conduct original research in a variety of disciplines. Grants are competitive and selections made by binational selection committees, with approval from the partner J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board in Washington DC for Fulbright awards, and by US Department of State partner agencies for other exchange programs. Awards to study in the US generally cover tuition and fees, textbooks, monthly living costs, international airfare, and health insurance.
The grants to Indonesians comprise Fulbright Scholarships for master’s and doctoral-level studies at US universities for two and three years respectively and grants for Indonesian doctorate holders to carry out six month’s research at a US university. The same categories of awards are available in a special program of DIKTI-funded Grants for Indonesian Lecturers, which is a joint Fulbright Program collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, which provides the bulk of the funds. It is open only to current lecturers at Indonesian universities.
Under the category of Fellowships are several non-degree programs, of which two are Fulbright exchange programs: the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program allows Indonesian English or Indonesian-as-a-foreign-language teachers to teach Indonesian language at an American university while taking courses relating to language-teaching and American studies. The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides ten months of non-degree academic study and related professional experiences in the United States for mid-career professionals, who are selected based on their potential for leadership and their commitment to public service in either the public or the private sector.
Four other non-degree fellowship programs are sponsored by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), but are not Fulbright programs per se, and are managed by different partners. The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program for International Teachers (Fulbright DAI, formerly called ILEP), managed by IREX, brings outstanding primary and secondary school teachers from around the globe to the United States to further develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States. The Community College Initiative (CCI) Program is also managed by IREX and allows selected students to spend one year studying at accredited US community colleges and gain practical hands-on experience. The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program, or Global UGRAD, is administered by World Learning on behalf of ECA. It allows undergraduates from Indonesia to experience the US educational system, enhance their knowledge, and explore US culture. Finally, the Fulbright US–ASEAN Visiting Scholar Initiative, a relatively new program administered by the US Mission to ASEAN and the Council of International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), provides opportunities for scholarly and professional research in the US for nationals of the ten ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, on ASEAN- or US-ASEAN-related topics.
Generally, selection preference for all AMINEF’s programs will be given to candidates who have not had extensive recent US experience. Candidates will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, political affiliation, marital status, status as a parent, or sexual orientation. Applications from qualified candidates beyond major cities on Java, for example, eastern Indonesia, are particularly welcome.
