Australia Awards in Indonesia
Australia Awards Scholarships are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders to obtain a Masters or PhD from an Australian tertiary institution. The Scholarships have been an important component of the Australian Government’s aid program in Indonesia since 1953. Through study, research and networking, scholarship recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links with Australia.
The Scholarships offer a wide range of benefits that include English language and academic support before studying in Australia, a series of professional development and networking activities that will enrich the knowledge, experience and network of scholars prior to, during and after their study. Please visit this page for more information on the Australia Awards Scholarships’ benefits.
Applicants are assessed on their professional qualities, soft skills, academic competence and, most importantly, their potential to impact development challenges in Indonesia.
The prestigious Australia Awards Scholarships aim to achieve a balance across female and male scholars and encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds. The Scholarships are available to all Indonesians with the potential to contribute positively to sustainable development in their country. The Scholarships also support the Equity Target Groups, aiming to overcome access barriers and reflect the development priorities of both governments. The groups comprise people with disability, women from a disadvantaged background and those from equity target provinces.
Applications close on 30 April 2024 at 20.59 WIB. Applying is now even easier through a single application form at this link.
When applying online, all essential supporting documents must be uploaded on the online application form (Cognito form) to meet the specific requirements for Indonesia.
We advise applicants to submit their applications online well before the closing date. The online application facility will be busiest in the days leading up to the application deadline, and applicants may experience delays.
Australia Awards Scholarships provide citizens of Indonesia with the opportunity to obtain a Masters or PhD/Doctorate degree from an Australian tertiary institution.
Masters Degree
- The maximum duration for a Masters degree program is two years.
- Masters degree programs may be offered by coursework, by research or by a combination of coursework and research. Masters by research or a combination of coursework and research should be offered only to those applicants who have demonstrated the need for high-level research skills in order to undertake research or teaching or to supervise researchers upon their return home.
- Double Masters degrees are permitted only when both are included in the institution's original offer and both courses can be completed within two years.
- Applicants wishing to undertake a Masters by research must investigate an appropriate supervisor. Australian university websites identify the institution’s areas of research strength. Applicants should supply evidence of past research undertaken and highlight outcomes.
PhD/Doctorate Degree
- The maximum duration for a PhD is four years.
- Study for the doctorate degree (PhD) may be subject to partner government approval. Normally, approval is given only where the applicant occupies or is expected to occupy a senior position requiring individual research or the supervision and training of other researchers in a research organisation (e.g., a university or research centre) in the applicant’s home country.
Length of Study and Course Options
Scholarships will be available for full-time study of an Australian post-graduate qualification for the minimum period required to complete the award through the relevant Australian university, selected from Australian Government contracted universities.

How to Select A University and Course of Study
DFAT’s website includes a full list of Australian institutions eligible to host scholars. You can also find the list here. You need to decide which institution you want to attend and choose an appropriate course. To find out about the content of specific courses, research the individual institution website. To find out about universities in Australia please go to Study in Australia website.
You should choose two preferences when submitting the application for the Master’s Awards and PhD Awards by providing the course’s CRICOS code in your application for each preference. You are encouraged to choose two different institutions rather than two different courses at the same institution. If your application for your first preference is unsuccessful, DFAT will forward your application to your second choice of institution. The CRICOS code for your course can be found on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) website.
