The University of Hamburg Merit Scholarships provide financial support to outstanding international students and doctoral researchers, enabling them to focus on their studies and engage actively in the university’s academic community. These scholarships recognize both academic excellence and social commitment.

🏅 Scholarship Benefits

• Monthly stipend of up to €930

• Doctoral researchers may receive up to €1,000 (limited cases)

• Funding duration: 2 semesters (12 months), renewable up to 2 years (or up to 3 years for some doctoral candidates)

✅ Eligibility Criteria

• Non-German citizenship

• Enrolled at the University of Hamburg for at least 2 semesters

  • Students in 2‑year Master’s or doctoral programs may apply after 1 semester

• Not eligible for German federal student loans (BAföG)

📝 Selection Process

Applicants are assessed based on:

• Academic excellence (GPA, research performance)

• Extracurricular and social engagement (e.g., volunteer work, intercultural activities)

• Achievements such as awards, presentations, or publications

• Motivation and, in some cases, financial need
