Special Scholarship Program (SSP) – Kochi University of Technology

The SSP is a fully funded, 3-year doctoral program taught in English, designed for highly motivated researchers who want to make a long-term commitment to advanced research and earn a PhD.

What’s Offered

• Full tuition waiver for three years.

• Monthly scholarship of ¥150,000 to cover living expenses.

• A one-time ¥150,000 travel allowance for international students for relocation and settling in.

• English writing courses, Japanese language classes, and tutor support.

• On-campus accommodation options: International House (Kami Campus) or Takasone Dormitory (Eikokuji Campus) when available.

Eligibility Criteria

• Doctoral candidates (3-year) in the Department of Engineering at KUT.

• Must secure permission from a supervisor listed on the SSP supervisor list before applying.

• Applicants should have a strong academic record, the ability to conduct research, and high English proficiency.

• Generally, candidates should be 35 years old or younger at the time of enrollment.

The SSP program supports research across multiple engineering and technology domains, such as:

• Intelligent Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering

• Electronic & Photonic Engineering

• Informatics & Data Innovation

• Architecture & Infrastructure Design

• Economics & Management under a technical perspective

Program Structure & Graduation Requirements

• Enroll in either April or October.

• Earn at least 10 doctoral-level credits over three years.

• Complete public defense (after a preliminary exam), and publish at least one peer-reviewed paper before graduation.

How to Apply

1. Submit a pre-application request form to up to two preferred supervisors.

2. Once your supervisor agrees, formally apply with required documents (research proposal, transcripts, recommendation letters, proof of English ability).

3. Shortlisted candidates may go through interview and exam.
