Description
The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is a highly competitive, fully-funded research award managed by Research Ireland and supported by the Irish government. It supports master’s and doctoral students in a broad range of disciplines with funding for both traditional and structured research.
What’s Offered
Annual funding up to €34,000, including:
A stipend (for example, €25,000 in some calls)
Tuition contribution (up to €5,750 per year)
Research expenses (about €3,250 annually)
Award duration ranges from 1 to 4 years, depending on the degree type:
Research master’s: up to 2 years
PhD: up to 4 years
Open to all disciplines, with special encouragement for interdisciplinary or pioneering research.
Eligibility Criteria
Open to candidates applying for a research master’s or PhD at an eligible Irish higher education or research-performing institution.
Applicants must submit a research proposal and secure supervisor's endorsement.
Strategic funding partners (e.g., Environment Agency, Met Éireann) offer themed strands, but applicants not aligned with these themes can still be considered.
Selection Process
Applications are evaluated via international, independent peer review for academic merit and research potential.
Final selection is made based on peer review and alignment with Ireland’s national research priorities.
Deadline
For the 2025 call: applicant deadline is 23 October 2025; supervisor endorsement by 6 November 2025.
