Description
The Freeman-ASIA program (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) supports U.S. undergraduate students with financial need who plan to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The goal is to expand cross-cultural understanding and increase American engagement with Asia.
Who Can Apply
U.S. citizens or permanent residents
Undergraduates in good academic standing with at least one term of enrollment remaining upon returning to the U.S.
Must have or demonstrate financial need (need-based aid or a verifiable need)
Program Requirements & Preferences
Study abroad program must last at least 8 weeks (summer term) or 12 weeks (semester)
Preference for programs with substantial host-country involvement (such as local faculty instruction)
Bonus points for including language study or Asian Studies content
Applicants should have minimal prior experience in the country of intended study
Award Amounts
Up to $3,000 for summer abroad programs
Up to $5,000 for one semester abroad
Up to $7,000 for a full academic year abroad
Selection Criteria
Financial need
Demonstrated interest in East or Southeast Asian studies
Quality and feasibility of the proposed service or return-home project
Academic merit
