Description

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is a highly competitive, fully-funded research award managed by Research Ireland and supported by the Irish government. It supports master’s and doctoral students in a broad range of disciplines with funding for both traditional and structured research.

What’s Offered

  • Annual funding up to €34,000, including:

    • A stipend (for example, €25,000 in some calls)

    • Tuition contribution (up to €5,750 per year)

    • Research expenses (about €3,250 annually)

  • Award duration ranges from 1 to 4 years, depending on the degree type:

    • Research master’s: up to 2 years

    • PhD: up to 4 years

  • Open to all disciplines, with special encouragement for interdisciplinary or pioneering research.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to candidates applying for a research master’s or PhD at an eligible Irish higher education or research-performing institution.

  • Applicants must submit a research proposal and secure supervisor's endorsement.

  • Strategic funding partners (e.g., Environment Agency, Met Éireann) offer themed strands, but applicants not aligned with these themes can still be considered.

Selection Process

  • Applications are evaluated via international, independent peer review for academic merit and research potential.

  • Final selection is made based on peer review and alignment with Ireland’s national research priorities.

Deadline

  • For the 2025 call: applicant deadline is 23 October 2025; supervisor endorsement by 6 November 2025.
