Description

The Scholarship for Foreign Students at Honjo International Scholarship Foundation offers full-time Master’s or PhD candidates from any country the opportunity to study in Japan, with strong emphasis on academic excellence, research potential and global leadership.

What’s Offered

  • Monthly stipend: approx. ¥230,000 for 1–2-year programmes; ¥210,000 for 3-year programmes; ¥180,000 for 4–5-year programmes.

  • Support for the full minimum period required to acquire the degree.

  • Around ten awards per cycle.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be non-Japanese citizens and have (or plan to have) admission to a Japanese graduate school.

  • All academic fields are eligible.

  • Selection based on academic record, research plan and social contribution potential.

Process & Structure

  • Application window typically runs from 1 September to 31 October.

  • Screening involves document review, followed by interviews (Japanese-language interview expected) in February.

  • Final result announced end of March; the funding starts on enrolment.

  • Applicants apply directly to the foundation, not via university nomination.

Deadline

  • Application deadline: 31 October 2025 for the intake starting in the next academic year.
